Call for Papers: Religion and Non-Religion in Contemporary Societies

With their methodological and theoretical tools, sociologists and scholars of religion are well equipped to study non-religion as well as the interplay of religion and non-religion. For this special issue, the editors of the journal Religion and Society in Central and Eastern Europe (RASCEE) welcome contributions – empirical, methodological, and theoretical – on religion and non-religion in contemporary societies. Though such calls have been made and stimulating researches published in recent decades, it is time for us, scholars working on Central and Eastern Europe, to take up the challenge more widely. Whether grasped as organized movements, loose associations or life styles, non-religion, it is assumed, can be better understood through the methods and theoretical conceptions sociologists of religion have expanded, that can also challenge them and provide a fresh look on religion as a social phenomenon. In former Communist countries, where atheism was enforced as part of the official ideology and where the recrudescence of religion has often given rise to tense relations between religion and non-religion, promising research is to be expected, both on the Communist period and its aftermath.

We encourage scholars working on countries of Central and Eastern Europe, but also on various parts of the world, to share their theoretical, empirical, and methodological reflections and research on religion and non-religion. We are particularly interested in bringing together different perspectives and types of material, from ethnography to surveys through visual analysis.

All original contributions have to be submitted for review in English. Manuscripts should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words long (inclusive of footnotes, tables, abstract, references, short biographical note etc.). Submissions must include an abstract (up to 200 words) and up to 5 key words.
