Public Lecture: José Casanova on "Secularisation or the Return of Religion?"

On the Relationship Between Religion and Secularity in European Societies

On 16 March 2017, 7 p.m., José Casanova, head of the Berkley Center’s Program on Globalization, Religion and the Secular, will open the W. Michael Blumenthal Lectures in honor of the founding director of the Jewish Museum Berlin. Casanova is one of the most eminent experts on questions of secularization and the relationship between the state and religious communities. He argues that religion is in no way losing its importance in modern society and contradicts the assumption that secularization is a prerequisite for open, tolerant societies.

The lecture and discussion will be held in German at the Jewish Museum Berlin, Old Building, ground level, Glass Courtyard (
Lindenstraße 9–14, 10969 Berlin). Admission is free, please make reservations: reservierung@jmberlin.de, Tel: +49 (0)30 25 993 488.
