Dear friends and colleagues, This week, we have a number of events for you – some of them with the participation of our colleagues – which you might find of interest. Moreover, we would like to draw your attention to a new publication. Meanwhile, the decreasing Corona infection figures in this country and region give us some confidence, so hopefully it won't be too long before we can meet again in person. Until then, take care of yourselves and each other and stay in good spirits!

Conference „Dieselbe Welt – und doch alles anders? Transformationen in Zeiten religiöser und gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche“ (“The same world – and yet everything different? Transformations in times of religious and social upheavals”), 19–21 MayEven though the numbers of infections in some parts of the world are finally dropping, the Corona pandemic has had a huge impact on our lives. In this context, we would like to draw your attention to this three-day online conference, organised by the Catholic University Center for Religion, Church and Society in Transformation in Eichstätt-Ingolstadt: Being confronted with the pandemic and profound crises and upheavals that affect the religious sphere as well as society(s) as a whole, the conference will turn to the concept of transformation in order to discuss its analytical and heuristic capacity with regard to the processing of such upheavals. After an interdisciplinary approach to the concept of transformation, the conference will take a look at upheavals and challenges of the present (“post-secularity”), historical transformation processes related to the change of media and language, the encounter of cultures, translation processes, forms of demarcation and adaptation and, finally, address questions of personality formation. Our director Monika Wohlrab-Sahr will contribute to the event with her presentation on „Das abstrakte Wir und der gespürte Nächste. Figuren der Sozialität und die Dilemmata des Religiösen in der Coronakrise“ (“The abstract We and the sensed Nearest – Figures of Sociality and the Dilemmas of the Religious in the Corona Crisis“. Her lecture will take place on 20 May at 7:30 p.m. (CET) and will also be streamed live. The conference will be held in German and enriched by a poster session on the different topics. For participation in the conference, please register via e-mail. Monika Wohlrab-Sahr's Lecture: 20 May, 7:30 p.m. (CET) Online via zoom

Around 40 speakers from the humanities and social sciences approach these questions with regard to diverse institutional settings such as education, the media, cultural institutions, healthcare and religion. Our Associate Member Marian Burchardt will contribute to a panel on “Faith in Diversity” with his presentation “The Promise of Architecture: Religious Diversity, Media and Affect in Berlin's ‘House of One’”. New Publication: Rushain Abbasi on “Islam and the Invention of Religion: A Study of Medieval Muslim Discourses on Dīn”Our colleague Rushain Abbasi has just published an article on “Islam and the Invention of Religion” which we don’t want to withhold from you. Here, he addresses the validity of the category of religion, which in recent years has been increasingly subjected to severe criticism across several academic disciplines. His article engages in a comprehensive conceptual historical analysis of the Arabic term dīn (and its related terminology) in order to demonstrate that, contrary to popular belief, premodern Muslims did indeed possess a concept akin to the modern sense of “religion” long before the rise of the modern West, and that, furthermore, they were the first historical community to sustain and develop a rich and robust analytical discourse around the idea of religion. You can read the full article in our member area. Apart from his latest publication, we are happy to welcome Rushain Abbasi as participant to our workshop on “Religion as an Object of Historical and Social Scientific Study. Global Perspectives” on 3–5 November where he intends to revisit the topic of his article with a presentation on “Doing Away with Religion: From Protestant Heresy to Post-Colonial Orthodoxy”.
