Next week’s colloquium: Housamedden Darwish on “The (In)Compatibility of Islam with Modernity: (Mis)Understanding of Secularity/Secularism in the Arab and Islamicate Worlds”Our Senior Research Fellow Housamedden Darwish will give a presentation on his research project on “The (In)Compatibility of Islam with Modernity: (Mis)Understanding of Secularity/Secularism in the Arab and Islamicate Worlds”. Our Associate Member Markus Dreßler will comment on his talk. As usual, you find the relevant reading in the member area. The colloquium will take place as a hybrid event. Job Opportunity: Postdoc Position in Social AnthropologyOur Junior Research Fellow Mascha Schulz, now working as a Research Fellow at the European Research Council (ERC) funded project “Religion and its Others in South Asia and the World (ROSA)” draws our attention to a job opportunity based at the University of Cambridge: The University’s Department of Social Anthropology invites applications for a full-time Research Associate position in the ethics of asylum and non-religion, to begin on 1 October 2021 for a period of 42 months. The successful applicant will join the multi-country research ROSA project, that uses an anthropological approach to investigate the forms in which individuals and communities raise, in the open or in more hidden transcripts, questions over the dominant religious norms in South Asia. The project is led by Jacob Copeman at the University of Santiago de Compostela/Spain, and includes a consortium of researchers based at Cambridge, Zurich, Lyon and Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany. Klezmer Summer Festival with Bassarabia Banda at Budde-HausDriving rhythms, rousing melodies and timbres from Europe and the Orient. Bassarabia Banda take their audience on a journey through the Balkans and its exciting and lively music. Just as the Balkans unite Europe and Asia, the music of the six musicians of the band, who come from Germany, Moldavia and Russia, unites them, too. The event takes place in the beer garden of the Budde-Haus – a socio-cultural centre in the northern part of Leipzig. We recommend reserving a seat via e-mail or directly at the counter of the beer garden. 23 July | 7.00–10.00 p.m. (CET) Budde-Haus (Beer garden), Lützowstraße 19, 04157 Leipzig Doors open 6.00 p.m. Free entrance | Donations welcome Please pay attention to the admission rules on site (keeping the minimum distance, obligation to wear masks in areas where a minimum distance cannot be maintained, registration of contact details.
