New Working Paper

The latest publication in our Working Paper Series is now online: In Working Paper #15 Aziz Al-Azmeh (Department of History, Central European University, Budapest) examines “Secularism and its Enemies”. This Working Paper is intended to suggest a fairly simple contention concerning a number of interconnected propositions made in connection with the debates on modernity and secularism.

After his inspiring input at our conference Critique of Modernity in 2018, where Al-Azmeh gave a lecture on "Vindicating Postcolonial Obscurantism", we appreciate the continued good cooperation and his contribution to our project.

Movie Screening: In the Name of….

We want to recommend to you the Polish movie „In the Name of…“ (2013) by Małgorzata Szumowska, screening at our partner, the Cinémathèque: Adam is a Catholic priest who discovered his calling as a servant of God at the relatively late age of 21. He now lives in a village in rural Poland where he works with teenagers with behavioural problems. Yet, Adam bears a secret: He knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he meets Łukasz, his self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden.

Screenings: 13, 14 and 17 July, 8 p.m. (Polish with German subtitles)

Venue: Cinémathèque Leipzig at naTo, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 46

Recommendation for events: The Leipzig Summer of Radio Plays

The Leipzig Summer of Radio Plays (Leipziger Hörspielsommer) is an annual open air event, during which various radio play programmes run all day on the idyllic Richard-Wagner-Hain. The family programme starts at 2 p.m. on weekends and 4 p.m. during the week, before the evening programme takes over from 6 p.m. onwards. Enjoy the unique atmosphere and be enchanted by great stories while sitting in your (self-brought) deckchairs, enjoying refreshing drinks or delicious food in the summer bar or your self-brought picnic.

This Friday, 10 July at 8pm there will also be an English language programme, the 18th International Audio Drama Competition.
