Screening Religion: Moschee DE

15 October 2019 | 7 p.m.
Cinémathèque Leipzig (Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 46)

Next Tuesday, we will start our first Screening Religion season at Cinématèque Leipzig with the film Moschee DE.

The film mirrors the partially fierce debates and protests in the run-up to the construction of the mosque for the Ahmadiyya community in Berlin-Heinersfeld in 2008. Based on interview protocols with opponents and supporters of the mosque, neighbours and community members, the film lets five fictitious characters enter into an equally fictitious dialogue: The convert, the politically correct newcomer, the local pastor, the imam and the chairman of a citizens' initiative that wants to prevent the construction.

Our fellow Florian Zemmin will introduce the film and moderate the following discussion. Rainer Frank, the actor playing the chairperson of the citizens' initiative, will be our guest.

Exhibition: Re:Orient – The Invention of the Muslim Other

The exhibition at the GRASSI Museum Leipzig traces the historical models and current effects of anti-Muslim racism.

How could such discrepancies between romantic idealization – a fairy tale from 1001 Nights – and the idea of the danger posed by Muslim people arise and how do people with Muslim roots and the so-called majority society deal with them today? The exhibition aims to answer these questions in a variety of ways and provide visitors with answers as well as further questions.

The exhibition will be on display from 16 October 2019 to 19 January 2020.
