Wednesday Weekly 14 July 2021

Dear friends and colleagues,

The colloquium is still in recess and meanwhile the GLOBE21 science festival, organised by the Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe), reaches its final stage. Until 17 July you may still enjoy a wide range of events – among them our Screening Religion tomorrow night with the two very touching films “The Heart of Jenin” and “After the Silence”. The screening starts at 7 p.m. and can be watched here.

Besides that, we have a new publication for you, a note about our reading group and recommendations for two very special events.

Enjoy and have a good week!

Anja & Lucy

Publication: Christian Mauder on “In the Sultan’s Salon: Learning, Religion, and Rulership at the Mamluk Court of Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī (r. 1501–1516)”

We are happy to announce our Senior Research Fellow’s Christian Mauder’s new publication entitled “In the Sultan’s Salon: Learning, Religion, and Rulership at the Mamluk Court of Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī (r. 1501–1516)”. In the two volumes, he constitutes the first detailed study of the Egyptian court culture of the Mamluk Sultanate (1250–1517). The book presents the first theoretical conceptualization of the term “court” that can be fruitfully applied to premodern Islamic societies. Much of the research and writing for this book was done during Christian’s stays with us in Leipzig in 2018 and 2019, so it is a special joy for us to see the completed work now.

Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften Leipzig (Long Night of the Sciences Leipzig) on 16 July

This year, the Long Night of the Sciences Leipzig welcomes you online! The largest joint event of Leipzig's science institutions brings lectures, guided tours, talks, games, experiments, puzzles and more directly to your home – or wherever you happen to be on 16 July from 6 p.m.

Among numerous events worth seeing, we would like to draw your attention to the presentation of the Documentation Centre for Religious and Ideological Pluralism in Germany at the Institute for the Study of Religions at Leipzig University. The documentation centre collects and catalogues source material on various religious and ideological communities in German-speaking countries with the focus on groups and movements that exist alongside the established churches. Guided by the question “Ist das Wissenschaft oder kann das weg?” (“Is this science or can it be thrown it away?”) there will be an online tour through the cellar vault of the centre followed by a discussion. A round of talks with students and lecturers will focus on how research behind dusty bookshelves finally creates its transfer to real life and does not remain just “abstract art”. Registration is not necessary.

16 July | 7.30–8.15 p.m. (CET)

Online via livestream
