Call for Papers: Workshop on Muslim Secularities

The Workshop will take place on 18–20 June 2017 at Leipzig University, Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies (Kolleg-Forschergruppe, KFG) „Multiple Secularities – Beyond the West, Beyond Modernities" in preparation for a special issue of Historical Social Research, ed. by Markus Dressler, Armando Salvatore, and Monika Wohlrab-Sahr (workshop organisers).

We call for papers delineating concepts and practices of distinction and differentiation (and/or their undoing) within Islamicate social and historical contexts, the conditions of their emergence, and the socio-economic, doctrinal, and political conflicts that have sustained them.

Please send a 500 words abstract of your paper by 1 March 2017 to Markus Dressler. We will cover travel and accommodation for the selected participants. Papers for the workshop, at least in draft form, are due by 2 June 2017. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the journal Historical Social Research.

Senior Research Fellowships for Projects on Secularity in Pre-Modern Asian Cultures

The Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies (Kolleg-Forschergruppe, KFG) „Multiple Secularities – Beyond the West, Beyond Modernities“ (headed by Prof. Christoph Kleine and Prof. Monika Wohlrab-Sahr) at Leipzig University is offering Senior Research Fellowships for scholars, who are working on questions that are related to the KFG’s research programme

The KFG investigates forms and arrangements of differentiation between religious and other social spheres, practices, interpretive frameworks, institutions and discourses in different eras and regions. These arrangements are referred to with the heuristic term “secularities”. Currently we are especially interested in scholars whose research is focused on questions of secularity in pre-modern Asian cultures.
